Water Leaking Inside the Car From AC
Clear water on the passenger-side carpet often comes from an AC drain that is blocked, slow or disconnected. It can also be a different fluid or a water-entry problem. The right question is where the liquid is coming from and what happens when the AC runs.
AC condensation is normal. A wet carpet is not.
When an AC system cools humid cabin air, moisture condenses on the evaporator. That water should travel through a drain tube and leave underneath the vehicle. A blocked drain is often straightforward to correct, but it should not be dismissed. Moisture beneath carpets can create odour, staining, corrosion, electrical problems or hidden dampness that continues after the visible water is gone. The repair should deal with both the drainage route and the affected cabin area.

Clear, thin water that follows AC use
It commonly appears after the AC has been running, especially in humid weather or after a hot cabin is cooled. The wet area may be near the front passenger footwell, but vehicle design changes the exact path. The drain, drain hose, evaporator case and cabin water damage all need a look.
Even then, clear water is a clue rather than a final diagnosis. A workshop still needs to confirm the drain discharge outside and check whether water is escaping from the correct route.
Coloured, oily, sweet-smelling or hot fluid
Coolant can have a colour, a sweet odour or a slippery feel, though colour alone is never a safe test. A heater-core issue can also fog windows or lower coolant level. How water is meant to leave the cabin
The evaporator sits inside the HVAC housing behind the dashboard. It cools air and removes moisture from it. Condensation collects in a lower tray area of that housing, then drains through a tube to the underside of the car. The tube exit can be hard to see because it depends on the vehicle platform and may be protected by undertrays or nearby components.
Condensation forms on the evaporator
This is expected while the AC is operating. High humidity and strong cooling demand can increase the amount of water produced.
The drain path carries it away
The tray, outlet and drain tube have to stay open and correctly connected. Dirt, biological buildup, debris or a kink can slow that path.
Restriction allows the housing to overflow
When water cannot leave quickly enough, it may escape into insulation, trim or carpeting instead of dripping outside the car.
The cabin needs checking after the path is cleared
Clearing a drain does not automatically remove trapped moisture. Carpet underlay and nearby connectors can hold water out of sight.
Location and timing give the workshop a better starting point
Take note of the first place that becomes wet, whether the AC has been on, whether the car was parked on a slope, and whether water drips normally outside. Do not pull trim or force a wire into a drain hole. It is easy to damage a drain connection, wiring or evaporator housing with improvised tools.

Confirm whether the system is discharging water under the vehicle, whether the drain is restricted, and whether the tube or its connection is damaged or displaced.
Evaporator housing and nearby access

A clean drain outlet can be a quick job. A disconnected tube, damaged housing, rainwater entry or coolant leak is a different scope. That distinction should be clear before repair work is approved. The details that help sort the first inspection
Outside puddle has stopped
If the AC used to drip clearly under the car and no longer does while the passenger carpet becomes wet, the drain route is a stronger branch to check. Some vehicles hide the outlet, so absence of a visible puddle is not final proof by itself.
Water appears after parking
Water may collect during a drive and continue moving through the cabin after the car stops. Note whether it is under the mat, near a trim edge or spreading toward the rear. Do not take apart panels to trace it.
Musty odour or recurring window mist
Persistent moisture can encourage odour and can make cabin glass mist more easily. That is useful evidence for checking the HVAC housing, filter area and affected interior material, not a reason to spray fragrance into the vents.
The AC cools normally
Normal cooling does not rule out an overflow. The evaporator may still cool the air while its condensation is unable to drain correctly. Conversely, weak cooling plus a leak can require a wider system assessment.
The car has been parked under trees or in dusty conditions
Debris can be relevant near exterior intake and drainage areas. It does not prove where the obstruction is, and a drain should never be attacked with an improvised object simply because the vehicle was parked outside.
