The AC condenser and engine radiator rely on the same front airflow, and the compressor adds load to the engine. Overcharge, poor condenser airflow, contamination or another refrigeration fault can increase high-side pressure and heat rejection. A spinning fan is not automatically a healthy fan

A common mistake is to see the fan rotating and declare the airflow system good. Modern vehicles may use two fans, multiple speeds or variable electronic control. A fan can spin too slowly, operate only one speed, turn in the wrong direction after incorrect repair, have a damaged shroud, or fail only when hot. The correct test compares what the vehicle is commanding with the airflow and speed the fan actually produces.

If overheating happens only in traffic, the fan should be observed when AC pressure and engine temperature are rising. If the fan is commanded to high speed but stays slow, the fault is different from a system that never requests high speed because of a sensor or control issue. If the fan works correctly and airflow is strong, attention moves toward radiator capacity, coolant circulation, compressor load and AC pressure behaviour.

Hot coolant can be pressurised and cause serious burns. Coolant level checks should be performed only when the vehicle is cold and according to the vehicle procedure.

Do not assume the AC gas is the cause

Adding refrigerant cannot fix a failed cooling fan, blocked radiator, weak water pump or compressor drag. The crossover between AC and engine cooling has to be tested.

Why does my car overheat only when the AC is on

The AC adds compressor load and the condenser adds heat in front of the radiator. A weak cooling fan, blocked airflow or marginal engine-cooling system may cope with the AC off and fail when that extra heat and load appear.

Why does the car overheat in traffic with the AC on

At low road speed, the cooling fans become responsible for pulling air through the condenser and radiator. A weak fan, missing high-speed fan operation or blocked front heat exchanger often becomes much more obvious in traffic.

Can a bad AC compressor make the engine overheat

Excessive compressor drag can add mechanical load, especially if there is internal damage, clutch trouble or belt distress. But a compressor should not be blamed until fan airflow, engine cooling and AC pressure behaviour are also checked.

Can low AC gas cause engine overheating
