Do not compare the quote only with resale value
An AED overhaul amount can look large against an old car’s market value, but replacement cost, registration condition, known history and planned ownership also matter. A reliable paid-off vehicle can justify a coherent repair even when the AC work is a noticeable percentage of resale value.
On the other hand, an overhaul is harder to defend when the car has severe cooling-system problems, unsafe damage, unavailable parts, major transmission issues or an owner planning immediate sale. AC repair should sit inside the whole vehicle plan.
Ask what outcome the overhaul buys. Does it restore both front and rear cooling, reduce repeat dashboard access, remove contamination and create a documented baseline? If the answer is only “new parts,” the value case is incomplete.
One overhaul can contain more than one sensible parts tier
Useful where electronic compatibility, compressor control, buried access or repeat labour makes specification confidence especially valuable.
Can control cost on disclosed components when fit, material, supplier support and warranty are strong enough for the vehicle plan.

Should every ten-year-old AC receive an overhaul?

Does a new compressor require every component?

The correct repair may be electronic or component-level, followed by performance verification. Replacing the condenser, evaporator and lines would add cost without addressing stronger evidence.
The quote should show compressor command, pressure plausibility and the reason the control path is isolated. “No cooling” does not prove internal compressor destruction.
Mechanical compressor breakup
A seized unit, metallic debris and discoloured oil can support a coordinated contamination plan. The workshop should state which heat exchangers or hoses can be flushed effectively, which components trap debris, and how oil balance will be restored. A full scope may include the compressor, condenser or filter-drier, expansion device, seals, cleanable lines, refrigerant and verification.
That still does not automatically include the evaporator unless contamination, leakage, access strategy or manufacturer procedure supports it.
Several ageing leaks
One leaking O-ring should not become an overhaul. But a confirmed evaporator leak, corroded rear line and damaged condenser on the same old vehicle can create repeated recovery, charging and downtime. A coordinated plan can be priced against staged repairs, especially if the owner wants several more years from the car.
Each leak location should have evidence. Old dye stains and assumptions are not enough to justify broad replacement.
Dashboard fault cluster
A leaking evaporator, degraded foam seals, failing temperature actuator and damaged drain may share HVAC-case access. Coordinating confirmed buried work can avoid a second dashboard strip. Accessible electronics or speculative parts should not be bundled merely because the interior is already open.
The quotation should name which trim, airbags, console, steering-column or infotainment operations are involved, plus the reassembly and scan checks used at completion.
Front and rear system decline
Patrol, Land Cruiser, Tahoe, Yukon and other multi-zone SUVs may have long refrigerant lines and separate rear components. Test front and rear vent temperature, airflow and control before deciding that both circuits need work. A front compressor problem can affect both zones; a local rear valve, blower or line fault may not.
An overhaul should preserve the distinction between shared refrigeration and local cabin-delivery faults.
Unknown repair history
Mixed refrigerant, missing labels, reused parts and undocumented oil additions can make the baseline uncertain. The first expense should be identity and condition testing, not a shopping list. Once the circuit contents, leaks, compressor health and airflow are understood, the workshop can decide whether restoration, staged repair or safe limited work is proportionate.
Document the corrected baseline so the next service does not restart from uncertainty.
Overhaul only when the evidence connects the work

A staged repair that appears cheaper can require several bookings, repeated recovery and recharge, new transport arrangements and multiple hot-weather verification periods. If a rare trim clip, rear line or model-specific condenser is unavailable, the technically complete scope may need to wait.
For a daily work vehicle, rental or missed-use cost can influence the crossover. Keep that separate from the repair invoice so the workshop is not blamed for an owner-specific value, but include it in your own decision. A faster incomplete repair is not automatically cheaper, and a long overhaul is not automatically more thorough. The useful promise is a sequence with parts confirmed, access planned, intermediate evidence recorded and final testing scheduled under conditions close to the original complaint.
Finally, decide what the old parts will show. A compressor, drier, valve or evaporator can provide useful evidence about debris, leakage or incorrect prior installation. Request photographs or return of parts where lawful and practical before disposal. This creates an audit trail for the warranty and makes the “full overhaul” label accountable to actual findings.
